How to perform a Penny Dreadful Séance
This is a playful post based upon one of my favorite Penny Dreadful episodes. If you haven’t gorged on this hit series from Showtime, stop right here and binge first. Stunning french actress Eva Green hypnotizes us weekly with layers of dark backstory. Seasons are full of Frankenstein monsters, Dr. Jekyl, a Werewolf , Dorian Grey, Witches, The Devil, Demonic posessions and Nosferatu-style Vampires. Years of Creature Feature villans shoved under your bed in one series. It doesn’t sound like it would work together, but it does. Penny Dreadful is beautifully written. It’s a hearty stew of everything that scared us as children. Folded in so subtly, that the stories make it familiar in a haunting way. Like Stephen King novels that weave characters, places and pets in such a way, that they almost seem part of your own memories.
We treat communication the dead with reverence. But we can’t ignore our youthful fascination with things that scare us. This is posted gingerly with a warning. This is a parlour game for entertainment. Use your words with caution. Chose your guests carefully. I doubt your guests will jump on the table and begin speaking in tongues. But, you may invite unwanted spirits into your home. If you really want to try this, even in fun, say a prayer of protection to both open and close your séance. You’ve been warned.
How to perform a Penny Dreadful séance:
- Plan your séance at night. Dark stormy nights preferred.
- Light candles, as many as you can find.
- Use a round table.
- Invite 8 people of courage.
- Reduce inhibitions by serving a signature cocktail. (But, not too much)
- Record your seance. You may be surprised by what you discover later.
Now the prayer.
Please join hands.
I ask forbearance.
I ask you to suspend disbelief.
Imagine your mind floating through the darkness of time.
Let your imagination be livered and roam with me.
Back in time to the ancient seas.
Back in time when the spirits walked.
Back in time when the sun was new.
Back in time when the old gods walked.
We call to the dead.
Come to us. Speak to us.
